Transit Gateway is a network hub that connects many VPCs and on-premises networks through a single point, replacing a messy web of peering connections.
Why it beats peering at scale
VPC peering is point-to-point and doesn’t scale — ten VPCs fully meshed need dozens of connections. Transit Gateway acts as a central router: each VPC and VPN connects once to the hub, and routing between them is managed in one place. The exam reaches for it whenever there are “many VPCs” to interconnect.
Test yourself
A company has 15 VPCs plus an on-premises data center and wants simple, centrally-managed connectivity between all of them. What’s the best solution?
- Full-mesh VPC peering
- AWS Transit Gateway
- A NAT gateway in each VPC
- Separate Internet Gateways

Correct answer: B. Transit Gateway is a central hub that connects many VPCs and on-prem networks with routing managed in one place. Full-mesh peering (A) explodes in complexity at 15 VPCs; NAT gateways (C) and Internet Gateways (D) provide internet access, not inter-VPC routing.
