AWS Batch runs large numbers of batch computing jobs for you, automatically provisioning the right amount and type of compute based on the job requirements — no cluster to manage.
When to reach for it
The tell is “run thousands of batch jobs” or “large-scale parallel processing” where you want AWS to handle the scheduling and compute. It’s different from Lambda (short functions, 15-min cap) and Step Functions (workflow orchestration). Heavy batch/HPC-style jobs → Batch.
Test yourself
A research team needs to run tens of thousands of independent compute jobs, with AWS provisioning and scaling the compute automatically. Which service?
- AWS Lambda
- AWS Batch
- Amazon SQS
- AWS Step Functions

Correct answer: B. AWS Batch schedules and runs large volumes of batch jobs, provisioning compute automatically. Lambda (A) caps at 15 minutes and isn’t built for huge batch fleets; SQS (C) is a queue; Step Functions (D) orchestrates workflows, it doesn’t run the batch compute.
