S3 Versioning keeps every version of an object, so an overwrite or delete never truly loses data — you can recover any prior version. It’s the foundation for protecting against accidental changes.
What to know
Once enabled, a “delete” just adds a delete marker; the old versions remain and are recoverable. Versioning pairs with lifecycle rules (to expire old versions and control cost) and with MFA Delete (to require MFA before permanent deletion). Accidental-overwrite protection → Versioning.
Test yourself
A team keeps accidentally overwriting important files in S3 and wants to be able to recover any previous version. What should they enable?
- S3 Transfer Acceleration
- S3 Versioning
- S3 Intelligent-Tiering
- Cross-Region Replication
👉 Click to reveal the answer & explanation
Correct answer: B. Versioning retains every version of an object so prior versions can be restored after an overwrite or delete. Transfer Acceleration (A) speeds uploads; Intelligent-Tiering (C) optimizes cost; replication (D) copies to another Region but isn’t version history within a bucket.
