Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) is AWS’s own container orchestrator. It runs and scales Docker containers, tightly integrated with AWS services, and is simpler to operate than Kubernetes.

When ECS fits

Choose ECS when you want to run containers on AWS without the complexity of Kubernetes and don’t need Kubernetes-specific portability. It runs on the EC2 or Fargate launch type, integrates with ALB, IAM, and CloudWatch, and pulls images from ECR. Need Kubernetes specifically? That’s EKS.

Practice question

A team wants to run Docker containers on AWS with the simplest, AWS-native orchestration and no need for Kubernetes portability. Which service?

  1. Amazon EKS
  2. Amazon ECS
  3. Amazon EC2 alone
  4. AWS Lambda

Correct answer: B. ECS is AWS’s native, simpler container orchestrator — ideal when you don’t need Kubernetes. EKS (A) is managed Kubernetes (more complex); raw EC2 (C) means orchestrating containers yourself; Lambda (D) runs functions, not long-running containers.
