How Difficult Is the AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate (DEA-C01) Exam?
DEA-C01 is a hard associate exam, mostly because it asks you to think like a data engineer. Here’s how hard it is, where it bites, and who should find it manageable.
DEA-C01 is among the harder associate-level AWS exams. It has 65 questions in 130 minutes and needs a scaled 720 to pass. It’s difficult because it’s specific: you need to know ingestion, transformation, storage, and governance services well enough to choose between them in realistic data pipeline scenarios.
If you’ve passed Solutions Architect Associate, you’ll find DEA-C01 about as demanding, but in a different way. It’s narrower and deeper.
Exam details
| Detail | DEA-C01 |
|---|---|
| Questions | 65 (50 scored, 15 unscored) |
| Time | 130 minutes |
| Passing score | 720 out of 1,000 |
| Cost | $150 USD |
| Recommended experience | 2 to 3 years in data engineering, plus 1 to 2 years of hands-on AWS |
The exam is newer than most associate exams. AWS launched it in early 2024, so its content reflects modern data practices on AWS.
The four domains
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Data Ingestion and Transformation | 34% |
| Data Store Management | 26% |
| Data Operations and Support | 22% |
| Data Security and Governance | 18% |
Why it’s difficult
It’s a pipeline exam. Questions describe a real data scenario: streaming clickstream data, a nightly batch from an on-prem database, a data lake that needs governance. You choose the right combination of services. That requires understanding how data moves, not just what each service does.
Big service surface area. You need working knowledge of Glue, Kinesis, MSK, Redshift, Athena, EMR, Lake Formation, DynamoDB, S3, Step Functions, EventBridge, and DMS, plus the security and monitoring services around them.
Close trade-offs. Should this be Kinesis Data Streams or Firehose? Glue or EMR? Athena or Redshift Spectrum? Several answers work, and the question’s constraints decide.
Data concepts count too. You’re expected to understand file formats like Parquet and ORC, partitioning, schema evolution, and ETL versus ELT. Not knowing why columnar formats help is a real handicap.
It rewards experience. Candidates who’ve actually built pipelines read the questions differently. They notice what could go wrong.
Who finds it manageable
- Working data engineers, analysts, or ETL developers who use AWS
- Candidates who’ve passed SAA-C03 and have some data exposure
- Engineers with Spark, SQL, and pipeline orchestration experience
Who struggles
- Cloud engineers with no data background
- Data analysts who’ve never built production pipelines
- Anyone studying only from videos
How it compares
| Exam | Difficulty feel |
|---|---|
| Cloud Practitioner | Easy, broad |
| Solutions Architect Associate | Moderate, wide |
| Data Engineer Associate | Moderate to hard, narrow and deep |
| Professional and specialty exams | Hard |

Where candidates lose points
- Confusing similar services, such as Kinesis Data Streams and Firehose or Glue and EMR
- Weak coverage of governance, such as Lake Formation permissions and encryption
- Overlooking operational details like monitoring pipelines and handling failures
- Not understanding cost and performance trade-offs in storage formats and partitioning
How to make it manageable
1. Learn the data flow: ingest, transform, store, serve, secure, operate 2. Build at least one end-to-end pipeline in the Free Tier or a low-cost sandbox 3. Study service comparisons as pairs and triples 4. Practice scenario questions under timed conditions 5. Use the exam guide as a checklist, and don’t skip the governance domain
Our DEA-C01 preparation guide lays this out, and the data service comparisons post covers the trade-offs the exam keeps returning to.
A few more questions people ask
Do I need to pass Solutions Architect Associate before DEA-C01?
No. AWS doesn’t require it. But SAA-C03 gives you the networking, IAM, and storage foundation that DEA-C01 assumes, so people who skip it often have to learn those pieces along the way.
Is DEA-C01 harder than SAA-C03?
Most candidates say it’s comparable. SAA-C03 is wider, and DEA-C01 is narrower and deeper. If you work with data every day, DEA-C01 tends to feel easier. If you don’t, it feels harder.
How long should I study for DEA-C01?
Plan on 80 to 150 hours, depending on your data background. People already building pipelines on AWS can be on the low end. Career changers should plan for the high end, plus time for hands-on labs.
