Short answer

Yes, AWS certifications are still worth it in 2026 for most people, especially career changers, early-career engineers, and anyone whose employer is an AWS partner. They won’t replace experience, but they remain a trusted, verifiable signal, and the preparation makes you better at the work.

I’m going to give you the version with the caveats, because “yes, always” is the kind of advice that gets people to spend money on the wrong thing.

What’s still true

AWS is still the largest cloud provider, and its credentials show up in a huge number of job listings. A verified certification tells an employer that you’ve studied a defined body of knowledge and passed a proctored exam. That’s more than a line on a resume saying “familiar with AWS.”

Certifications also still matter to companies in the AWS Partner Network, which need certified staff to qualify for partner tiers. For those employers, your credential can have direct financial value.

What’s changed

AI has made shallow knowledge cheap. Anyone can ask an assistant how to set up a VPC. That raises the value of verified, deep understanding and lowers the value of memorized trivia. Good exams test judgment, which is harder to fake.

The market is tougher at entry level. Hiring for junior cloud roles has been competitive. A certification alone won’t guarantee interviews, so it works best alongside projects.

The lineup keeps evolving. AWS retires and launches exams regularly, and newer ones cover AI, machine learning, and data engineering. Check what’s current before you study.

When they’re worth it

  • You’re changing careers and need credible proof of skills
  • You’re early in your career and have limited work history
  • Your employer values or requires them, or reimburses the cost
  • You want a structured way to learn the platform
  • You’re moving toward consulting, where credentials help win clients
  • You’re in a region or industry where certifications are a hiring filter

When they’re less worth it

  • You already have years of strong, verifiable AWS experience and a good network
  • You don’t use AWS and don’t plan to
  • You’d be taking an exam purely to collect badges
  • You’re hoping a certification alone will deliver a job or a raise

What the money looks like

Exams cost $100 to $300, and study costs vary. A path of Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate, and one more exam can total a few hundred dollars. For many people the credentials pay for themselves quickly, particularly if an employer reimburses them. Pay data varies, and we break it down in how much AWS-certified professionals actually make.

Which ones carry the most weight

For breadth, Solutions Architect Associate is the most recognized. For developers, Developer Associate. For data, Data Engineer Associate. Professional-level and specialty exams carry more weight for senior roles. Cloud Practitioner is a starting point more than a differentiator.

How to get real value

1. Pick the certification that matches the job you want 2. Build projects while you study, and publish them 3. Put the certification and the projects on your resume and LinkedIn 4. Use the 50% voucher to continue up the path 5. Keep it current, since certifications expire after three years

Honest limits

Certifications won’t fix a weak resume, poor interviewing, or a lack of hands-on skill. They help most when combined with other evidence. We discuss the job-search angle in can you get a job with an AWS certification.

Bottom line

Still worth it, with realistic expectations. For a broader look at the question, our longer piece on whether AWS certification is worth it goes through the cases in more detail.
