What Is the Minimum Passing Score for the AWS CLF-C02 Exam?

The passing score is 700 out of 1,000, and the way AWS gets to that number is not what most people assume.

Short answer

The minimum passing score for AWS CLF-C02 is 700 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000. It is a scaled score, not a straight percentage, so you can’t convert it to a fixed number of correct answers.

That number comes straight from AWS’s official exam guide for the Certified Cloud Practitioner exam, and it hasn’t changed from the earlier CLF-C01 version. But there’s more to it than “get 700.”

What a scaled score means

AWS doesn’t report how many questions you got right. It takes your raw performance and converts it onto a 100 to 1,000 scale using a statistical process called scaling. You pass at 700 or above.

The reason AWS does this is fairness. The exam has many versions, and one form might be slightly harder than another. Scaling adjusts for that, so a 700 means the same level of knowledge no matter which form you drew. It’s the same idea as how some standardized tests work.

The practical consequence is that you can’t say “I need 46 of 65 right.” Nobody outside AWS knows the exact conversion, and it can vary between forms.

What the exam looks like underneath

CLF-C02 has 65 questions. Fifty are scored. Fifteen are unscored trial questions that AWS is testing for future exams. You can’t tell which is which, so treat every question as though it counts.

The exam uses a compensatory model. That means you don’t need to pass each domain separately. You need a passing overall score. If you’re strong in Security and weak in Billing, the strength can offset the weakness.

There’s no negative marking. A wrong answer costs you nothing beyond missing the point, so never leave a question blank. If you’re out of time, guess.

How people roughly translate it

AWS doesn’t publish a conversion, but many candidates use a rule of thumb: 700 out of 1,000 feels like somewhere around 70% correct. That’s a decent mental model for planning, as long as you remember it’s an approximation. Some forms may need a little more, some a little less.

That’s why I tell people to aim well above the line on practice exams. If you’re getting 80% on unseen full-length practice tests, you have a healthy cushion. If you’re hovering at 70%, you’re gambling on which form you get.

How you find out your score

Your result appears as pass or fail shortly after you finish, often on screen right away. Your detailed score report arrives in your AWS Certification account within a few business days, typically within five. The report shows your scaled score and gives a performance breakdown by domain, showing whether you were above or below the proficiency line in each.

If you fail, that breakdown is the most useful thing you’ll receive, because it points to what to study before you retake. Our guide to what to do after failing Cloud Practitioner walks through using it.

The passing scores across AWS exams

Exam level Passing score
Foundational (including CLF-C02) 700
Associate (SAA-C03, DEA-C01 and others) 720
Professional 750
Specialty 750

Associate exams need slightly more, so don’t assume your Cloud Practitioner experience scales directly. For details on how scoring works across the whole program, see how AWS exam scoring actually works.

What to do with this information

Stop trying to reverse-engineer the exact number of correct answers. It’s not knowable, and it won’t help you pass. Instead:

  • Aim for 80% or higher on realistic practice exams before booking
  • Spread your study across all four domains, because strength in one can only cover so much
  • Answer every question, since guessing is free
  • Use the domain breakdown from each practice attempt to decide what to study next

The target score is 700. The goal is to be far enough above it that the exact conversion doesn’t matter.
