What Is the Pass Percentage for the AWS Solutions Architect Associate Exam?
AWS sets the bar at a scaled 720 out of 1,000. Here’s what that means in real answers, and how to aim above it.
The AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) exam requires a scaled score of 720 out of 1,000 to pass. AWS doesn’t publish a percentage, but 720 is roughly 72% on a straight scale. Because scoring is scaled, the number of correct answers needed can shift slightly between exam forms.
If you were hoping for a simple “you need 47 out of 65,” the honest answer is that AWS doesn’t give one. Here’s what we do know.
The official passing score
The SAA-C03 passing score is 720 on a scale of 100 to 1,000. That’s higher than the 700 required for Cloud Practitioner, and it’s the same bar as the Developer Associate and Data Engineer Associate exams.
AWS uses scaled scoring so that different versions of the exam are comparable. A harder set of questions gets adjusted so your 720 represents the same level of competence as anyone else’s.
So what’s the percentage?
AWS hasn’t published a conversion. The common rule of thumb is that 720 of 1,000 works out to about 72%, and practice exam providers usually set their pass line there. That’s a reasonable planning number. But the real exam has two quirks that make exact math impossible.
First, 15 of the 65 questions are unscored. They’re experimental items AWS is testing for future exams, and you can’t tell which ones they are. So you’re really being scored on 50 questions.
Second, scaling means the number of right answers needed isn’t fixed. It may be a bit higher on one form and lower on another.
A quick table
| Score on a realistic practice exam | Reading |
|---|---|
| Below 65% | Not ready. More study needed. |
| 65% to 72% | Borderline. A pass would be luck. |
| 72% to 80% | Close. Target your weak domains. |
| 80% or higher, repeatedly | Good position to book. |
Do you need to pass every domain?
No. SAA-C03 uses compensatory scoring, which means you need a passing overall score, not a minimum in each domain. Strong performance in one area can offset weakness in another.
You still get a domain-level breakdown in your score report, which shows whether you were above or below the proficiency line in each of the four domains. It’s useful for diagnosing what to study if you need to retake, but it doesn’t change your pass or fail result.
Don’t take that as permission to skip a domain. Design Secure Architectures is 30% of the exam, and Design Resilient Architectures is 26%. If you neglect either, you’re giving up a lot of points.
How to aim above the line
Because exact conversion is unknown, build a cushion.
- Target 80% or more on full-length practice exams, taken under timed conditions
- Use new exams. Retaking the same one inflates your score because you remember the answers
- Review every question, including the ones you guessed right
- Watch your pacing. If you finish with 30 minutes to spare, you’re not using enough of your review time
No penalty for guessing
A wrong answer doesn’t cost you more than a blank one. Never leave a question unanswered. If you’re running out of time, guess. If you can eliminate even one option, the odds improve.
How results arrive
You usually see pass or fail on screen when you finish. Your scaled score and domain breakdown follow in your AWS Certification account, typically within five business days. If you pass, you’ll receive your digital badge and a 50% discount voucher for a future exam.
How it compares across AWS exams
| Level | Passing score |
|---|---|
| Foundational | 700 |
| Associate | 720 |
| Professional | 750 |
| Specialty | 750 |
