How Much Does It Cost to Get the AWS CLF-C02 Certification?

The exam fee is $100. The real cost depends on how you study and whether you need a second try. Here’s the full picture, with a way to keep it near the minimum.

Short answer

The AWS CLF-C02 exam costs $100 USD, plus any local taxes. Study materials can be free or run to a couple hundred dollars. A realistic total for most people is between $100 and $250, and a retake adds another $100.

Let’s break this down properly, because “how much does it cost” has a few layers.

The exam fee

The Cloud Practitioner exam is $100 USD. That’s the price whether you take it at a testing center or online with a proctor. Depending on where you live, you may also pay tax such as VAT or GST on top, and AWS shows you the final amount at checkout. Fees are set in US dollars, so if you’re paying in another currency, the exchange rate matters a little.

Foundational exams are priced at $100, associate exams at $150, and professional and specialty exams at $300. So CLF-C02 is the cheapest in the lineup.

What about the study costs?

This is where totals diverge. You can spend almost nothing or a few hundred dollars. Here’s the usual range.

Item Typical cost
AWS Skill Builder free tier (Cloud Essentials, exam prep, sample questions) Free
Video course from a third-party platform $15 to $60, often on sale
Practice exams Free to about $30
Official AWS practice exam Paid, a modest fee. Check Skill Builder for the current price
Books $20 to $40
AWS Free Tier for hands-on practice Free within limits

You don’t need all of that. One solid course, the free AWS material, and a good set of practice exams will carry most people through.

A realistic budget

Here are three ways this tends to play out.

The lean route. Free AWS Skill Builder material, one free or low-cost video course, a few free practice tests, and the exam. Total: about $100 to $130.

The typical route. One paid course on sale, a paid set of practice exams, and the exam. Total: about $150 to $200.

The “I want every advantage” route. Several courses, books, and multiple practice sets. Total: $250 or more. In my experience, past the typical route you’re mostly buying comfort, not points.

The cost people forget: a retake

If you don’t pass, you pay the full $100 again, and you have to wait 14 days before your next attempt. AWS has no limit on how many times you can retake, but each try costs the full fee. Our post on what happens if you fail covers the retake policy.

Practice exams are the cheapest insurance against this. A $20 practice set that tells you you’re not ready yet is a bargain next to a $100 failed attempt.

Ways to bring the cost down

  • Check whether your employer pays. Many companies reimburse exam fees, especially for people in cloud-adjacent roles. Ask before you pay.
  • Look for AWS promotions. AWS periodically offers free retake vouchers or discounts through events, training programs, and partner initiatives. They come and go, so check your AWS Certification account.
  • Use free AWS training. Skill Builder has solid free content, and the exam guide is free.
  • Don’t buy five courses. One good one is enough. A second course mostly repeats the first.
  • Use the Free Tier carefully. Hands-on practice is worth doing, but set up a billing alert so you don’t pay for something you forgot to shut off.

What you get back

After you pass, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher for your next certification exam. If you move on to an associate exam at $150, that brings it to $75. That’s a real saving, and it expires, so note the date.

You also get a digital badge, a certificate, and a three-year validity window. If you plan to keep going on the certification path, the voucher alone offsets half the cost of the next exam.

Is it worth $100?

For most people who are earning their first credential, yes. It’s inexpensive, it gives you a structured way to learn the AWS landscape, and the voucher softens the price of the next step. If you’re a working cloud engineer who already knows this material, it’s less compelling, and the associate exam is probably a better use of your money.
