SWF is AWS’s older workflow-coordination service. It manages tasks, state, and coordination for applications — including workflows that involve human steps — but for most new work AWS now points you to Step Functions.
When SWF still appears
The exam may present SWF as an option; know it’s the legacy choice. Pick it only when a scenario specifically involves existing SWF applications or workflows needing external/human task coordination that Step Functions doesn’t fit. Otherwise, Step Functions is preferred.
