Aurora Global Database replicates your Aurora database across multiple Regions with very low replication lag, giving fast local reads worldwide and cross-Region disaster recovery with rapid failover.

Global Database vs read replicas

Cross-Region read replicas exist, but Aurora Global Database is purpose-built for global apps and DR: sub-second replication, low-latency local reads in each Region, and promotion of a secondary Region in under a minute if the primary Region fails. The tell is “multi-Region relational database with fast reads and Region-level DR.”

Practice question

A relational application needs low-latency reads in several Regions and the ability to fail over to another Region within a minute if the primary Region goes down. Which option?

  1. A single-Region Aurora cluster
  2. Aurora Global Database
  3. RDS Multi-AZ
  4. DynamoDB Global Tables

Correct answer: B. Aurora Global Database replicates across Regions with sub-second lag, local reads, and fast cross-Region failover. A single-Region cluster (A) has no cross-Region DR; Multi-AZ (C) is within one Region; DynamoDB Global Tables (D) is NoSQL, not a relational fit.
