AWS Budgets lets you set custom cost or usage limits and get alerted when your spending is forecast to exceed them — so a surprise bill never sneaks up on you.
Where it fits
The tell on the exam is “alert when spending exceeds a threshold” or “notify the team before the bill hits a limit.” Budgets sends notifications (and can even trigger actions) when actual or forecasted cost/usage crosses your set amount. Analyzing spend is Cost Explorer; setting a limit and getting alerted is Budgets.
Test yourself
A team wants an email alert whenever their monthly AWS spend is forecast to go above $5,000. Which service?
- AWS Cost Explorer
- AWS Budgets
- AWS Config
- Amazon CloudWatch billing dashboard only

Correct answer: B. AWS Budgets sends alerts when actual or forecasted spend crosses a threshold you set. Cost Explorer (A) analyzes but doesn’t alert on a budget limit; Config (C) is configuration compliance; a plain billing dashboard (D) doesn’t send proactive budget alerts.
