CloudFront origin failover uses an origin group with a primary and secondary origin; if the primary returns errors, CloudFront automatically serves from the secondary — improving availability of your content.

The tell

When a scenario needs high availability for content delivery — automatically fall back to a backup origin if the primary S3 bucket or server fails — that’s origin failover with an origin group. It’s the CloudFront-layer resilience pattern.

Practice question

You want CloudFront to automatically serve content from a backup S3 bucket if the primary origin returns errors. What do you configure?

  1. A second CloudFront distribution
  2. A CloudFront origin group with failover
  3. Route 53 latency routing
  4. S3 Cross-Region Replication only

Correct answer: B. A CloudFront origin group with a primary and secondary origin fails over automatically on primary errors. A second distribution (A) doesn’t auto-fail-over within one; Route 53 latency routing (C) optimizes speed, not origin failover; replication (D) copies data but doesn’t switch origins.
