The Glue Data Catalog is a central metadata store — a directory of your data’s tables, schemas, and locations. It’s the backbone that lets Athena, Redshift Spectrum, and EMR all query the same data without redefining it each time.

Why it matters on the exam

Crawlers populate the catalog by scanning data in S3 and inferring schema. Once a table is in the catalog, multiple services query it directly. When a question asks how Athena knows the schema of S3 data, or how to share one schema across services, the answer is the Glue Data Catalog.

Practice question

A team wants Athena and Redshift Spectrum to query the same S3 datasets using one shared, central schema definition. What provides that?

  1. A separate schema in each service
  2. The AWS Glue Data Catalog
  3. An S3 bucket policy
  4. A DynamoDB table

Correct answer: B. The Glue Data Catalog is the central metadata store that Athena, Redshift Spectrum, and EMR share, so schema is defined once. Defining schema per service (A) duplicates work; bucket policies (C) control access, not schema; DynamoDB (D) isn’t a metadata catalog.
