How Many Times Can You Retake the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam?

There’s no cap on attempts, but there are rules about timing and cost. Here’s the retake policy in plain terms and how to avoid needing it.

Short answer

There’s no limit on how many times you can retake the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam. After a failed attempt you must wait 14 calendar days, and every attempt costs the full $100 fee. If you pass, you generally can’t retake the same exam for two years.

AWS’s retake policy is simple, which is nice, because the rest of the process isn’t always.

The rules

After a failed attempt. You wait 14 calendar days before you can sit for the same exam again. The count starts the day after your attempt. If you test on a Monday, you’ll be eligible again on the Monday two weeks later.

Number of attempts. Unlimited. AWS doesn’t cap how many times you try. Some certification programs limit attempts per year, but AWS doesn’t.

Fee. You pay full price each time. There’s no discount for a second try, and no refund for a failed one. For CLF-C02, that’s $100 per attempt.

After a pass. If you pass, you can’t take the same exam again for two years, unless you’re recertifying. The rule exists to prevent people from retaking for a better result.

How the 14 days work in practice

You can schedule the retake before the 14 days are over, as long as the exam date is on or after the day you’re eligible. In practice, I’d suggest you wait to book until you’ve diagnosed what went wrong. A date on the calendar makes you study, but a date you can’t hit makes you panic.

If you’re booking through the testing provider, the system will reject a date that falls inside the waiting period, so you can’t accidentally book too soon.

What it costs if you need several tries

Here’s how fast it adds up.

Attempts Exam fees
1 $100
2 $200
3 $300

That’s before study materials. Two or three failed attempts costs more than the associate-level exam you might have taken instead. It’s a good reason to be selective about when you sit for it.

Are there ways to get a free retake?

Occasionally. AWS sometimes runs promotions that include a free retake voucher, usually tied to a campaign, training program, or event. They’re time-limited and the terms vary. Check your AWS Certification account and the AWS certification pages. Don’t count on one, but don’t pay full price without checking.

What about the 50% voucher?

After you pass any AWS certification, you receive a 50% discount voucher for a future exam. That voucher is for a new exam, not for a retake of one you failed. So a failed attempt doesn’t earn you one.

Should you retake right away?

No. Not unless you know exactly what went wrong. The best retake strategies I’ve seen share the same pattern:

  • Review the domain breakdown in the score report
  • Fix the weakest domain first
  • Take a full timed practice exam and score at least 80%
  • Book only after that

People who rebook immediately and “just try again” often fail again with a similar score. The exam isn’t random. Without a change in preparation, you’ll get a similar result.

Is there a downside to many attempts?

Not officially. AWS doesn’t report your history to employers or put it on your record. The costs are your time, money, and confidence. Repeated failures usually hurt more emotionally than practically, so if you’re stuck, step back and change your approach.

Alternatives

If Cloud Practitioner keeps beating you, check whether the problem is the material or the format. Some people do better by moving to a different learning style, like labs, or by taking practice exams in a more exam-like setting. And if you have hands-on AWS experience already, you might consider going directly to an associate exam, which is more scenario-based and might suit you better.
