Can You Learn AWS Data Engineering in 3 Months?
You can get exam-ready in three months and still not be a data engineer. Here’s what’s realistic, week by week, depending on where you start.
Yes, you can learn enough AWS data engineering in three months to pass DEA-C01 if you already know SQL and have some data or cloud background and can study 8 to 10 hours a week. Becoming job-ready takes longer, because that depends on projects and practice, not just exam knowledge.
It helps to separate two goals. Passing the exam is a three-month project for most motivated people. Working as a data engineer is a longer road, though the same three months can start it.
What you need walking in
Three months works if you have:
- Solid SQL, including joins, aggregations, and window functions
- Basic Python or another scripting language
- Some familiarity with cloud concepts
- Comfort with databases and file formats
If you’re missing SQL or any programming, add a month first. Data engineering without SQL isn’t really possible.
A 12-week plan
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | AWS foundations: IAM, S3, VPC basics, CloudWatch. Skip if you already know them. |
| 3 to 5 | Ingestion and transformation: Kinesis, MSK, Glue, EMR, DMS, Lambda, Step Functions |
| 6 to 7 | Storage and analytics: S3 data lakes, Redshift, Athena, DynamoDB, Lake Formation |
| 8 | Operations and monitoring: orchestration, data quality, troubleshooting, cost |
| 9 | Security and governance: encryption, IAM, Lake Formation permissions, data privacy |
| 10 to 11 | Practice exams, review weak domains, more hands-on labs |
| 12 | Final timed exams, light review, exam day |
At 8 to 10 hours per week, that’s roughly 100 to 120 hours, which fits DEA-C01 for most people with a data background.
What to build while you study
Hands-on work is the difference between “passed” and “can do the job.” Here are three small projects that pay off:
1. A batch pipeline. Land a CSV in S3, use a Glue crawler and job to convert it to Parquet, and query it with Athena. 2. A streaming pipeline. Send events to Kinesis, process them with Lambda or Firehose, and store them in S3. 3. A small warehouse. Load transformed data into Redshift and run analytical queries.
Keep costs in check by setting a billing alarm and cleaning up resources after each lab.
What three months won’t give you
- Production experience handling failures, backfills, and schema changes
- Judgment about cost at scale
- The instincts that come from owning a pipeline for a year
Employers know that. Your portfolio of small projects will bridge part of the gap, and the certification gives a credible baseline.
Faster and slower paths
Faster (6 to 8 weeks): You already work in data on AWS. You mainly need exam alignment and practice questions.
Slower (5 to 6 months): You’re new to cloud and to data engineering. Learn SQL, Python, and cloud basics first, then follow the plan above.
Common mistakes
- Spending all the time on video courses and not building anything
- Skipping governance and security because they feel less interesting
- Memorizing service features without learning the trade-offs
- Not taking timed practice exams until the final week
What if you only have one week?
That’s a very different plan. We cover it in preparing for DEA-C01 in one week, and the short version is that it only works with substantial prior experience.
For the full preparation plan, see our DEA-C01 guide, and for building experience cheaply, read how to get hands-on AWS practice.
A few more questions people ask
Do I need to know Spark?
Not for the exam itself, but it helps. Glue and EMR use Spark, and understanding how it processes data makes pipeline questions easier.
Should I learn SQL first?
Yes. SQL is a baseline skill for data engineering, and it comes up in Athena and Redshift questions. If you’re weak in SQL, spend your first weeks there.
Are there free data engineering labs on AWS?
AWS Skill Builder includes free and paid labs, and the Free Tier covers some data services in limited amounts. Always set a billing alarm before you experiment.
Practice for the DEA-C01 with full-length exams
Six full-length DEA-C01 practice exams, 390 questions in all, built around the real exam blueprint. Run them timed to rehearse your pacing, or drill one domain at a time when you know where you are weak. You see how you did by domain after every attempt, so you know what to study next.
- 6 full-length exams, 65 questions each
- Timed exam mode and practice by domain
- Explanations to learn from your misses
- Results broken down by exam domain
