Can You Learn AWS in 3 Months?
You can learn enough in three months to build real things and pass an associate exam. You won’t know all of AWS, and nobody does. Here’s what’s realistic.
Yes. In three months of steady study, about 8 to 10 hours a week, most people can learn the core of AWS well enough to build small systems and pass an associate-level certification. Mastering AWS takes years, because there are more than 200 services, but you don’t need most of them to be useful.
The trick is deciding what “learn AWS” means for you. If it means “be competent with the core services and pass an exam,” three months works. If it means “know everything,” nothing works.
What you can realistically cover
Three months gets you through the core:
- Compute: EC2, Auto Scaling, Lambda, containers at an introductory level
- Storage: S3, EBS, EFS
- Databases: RDS, DynamoDB, a sense of Aurora and Redshift
- Networking: VPC, subnets, security groups, load balancers, Route 53, CloudFront
- Security: IAM, KMS, shared responsibility
- Operations: CloudWatch, CloudTrail, basic cost management
That’s the heart of what most jobs and the associate exams use.
A 12-week plan
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Cloud basics, the console, IAM, and the shared responsibility model |
| 3 to 4 | Compute and storage: EC2, S3, EBS |
| 5 to 6 | Networking: VPC, load balancing, DNS, CDN |
| 7 to 8 | Databases and application integration: RDS, DynamoDB, SQS, SNS |
| 9 | Security, monitoring, and cost |
| 10 to 11 | Practice exams and weak-area review |
| 12 | Final timed exams and the real exam |
What changes the timeline
Your background. Someone with sysadmin or developer experience moves faster. A complete beginner might need four to six months.
Your weekly hours. Ten hours a week gets there. Three hours a week doesn’t.
Your approach. Building things teaches faster than watching. People who only watch videos retain much less.
Your goal. Passing Cloud Practitioner takes far less than three months. Passing Solutions Architect Associate with no background takes the full three or more.
What three months won’t give you
- Deep experience with production failures
- Fluency in advanced services like EKS, Kinesis, or Redshift tuning
- The judgment that comes from running systems for a year
That’s normal. Everyone building on AWS keeps learning every month.
How to make it stick
1. Build as you learn. A static site on S3, a web server on EC2, a private network with a public and private subnet. 2. Use the Free Tier, and set a billing alarm on day one. 3. Learn in comparisons. When to use one service over another. 4. Test yourself weekly with practice questions. 5. Teach it back. Explain a concept in your own words. If you can’t, you don’t know it yet.

A good starting target
Pick one certification as a focus. For most beginners, either Cloud Practitioner (one to two months) or Solutions Architect Associate (three months or more). A deadline keeps you moving.
For the detailed week-by-week version, see a 30-day AWS study plan, and for the typical timeline across certifications, read how long it takes to get AWS certified.
Bottom line
Three months is enough to become genuinely useful on AWS, not an expert. Be clear about your goal, build as you study, and you’ll get further than most people expect.
A few more questions people ask
What’s the best first certification to aim for in three months?
For beginners, Cloud Practitioner fits in one to two months, leaving time to start Solutions Architect Associate. For people with IT experience, Solutions Architect Associate is a realistic three-month goal.
Do I need to pay for courses?
Not necessarily. AWS Skill Builder has free material, and the Free Tier covers hands-on practice. Many people add one paid course and a practice exam set.
What if I only have five hours a week?
Then plan on roughly five to six months for an associate-level exam. Consistency matters more than session length.
