Short answer

CLF-C02 is the easiest AWS certification exam. It tests breadth, not depth, and has no hands-on configuration. But it isn’t trivial: the questions are worded to make several answers look right, and people who skip studying and rely on general IT knowledge fail it regularly.

If you search this question you’ll find two camps. One says it’s a joke and you can pass it over a weekend. The other says it was harder than they expected. Both are telling the truth, and which camp you land in depends mostly on your starting point.

How hard it is, by the numbers

The exam has 65 questions in 90 minutes, and you need 700 out of 1,000 to pass. Compared with the associate-level exams, that’s a lot more time per question: roughly 80 seconds each, against about two minutes for the associates, but the questions are much shorter. There are no long architecture scenarios and no multi-paragraph case descriptions.

Everything is multiple choice or multiple response. You don’t configure anything and you don’t write anything. AWS publishes no official pass rate, so anyone quoting you a percentage is guessing. What I can tell you from watching people prepare is that someone who studies properly passes on the first attempt far more often than not.

Why people find it easier than expected

You’re being tested on recognition. Nobody asks you how to set up a VPC peering connection or write an IAM policy. They ask you which service lets you do something, or what a concept means. If you’ve read a decent course once and done practice questions, that’s a manageable ask.

The exam also leans on ideas that make sense to anyone who’s worked in IT or business: cost models, shared responsibility, availability. If you have a technical background, much of the vocabulary is familiar.

Why people find it harder than expected

Three things catch people.

Breadth. You’re expected to know something about dozens of services. No single one is hard, but there are a lot of them, and the names are confusing. The difference between Inspector, GuardDuty, Macie, and Detective is not obvious until someone explains it.

Wording. AWS writes distractors carefully. A typical question has two answers that could work and one that fits the exact phrasing better. “Most cost-effective,” “least operational overhead,” and “highly available” all point to different answers for the same scenario. If you read quickly, you’ll pick the plausible one.

Underestimating it. This is the big one. People hear it’s the easy cert, study for a few hours, and take a first practice test where they score 55%. Then they’re surprised.

How hard by background

Your background What to expect
Working in cloud or IT already Comfortable. 15 to 25 hours of focused review is usually enough.
Technical but new to AWS Fair. Plan on 25 to 40 hours, mostly learning the service names.
Non-technical (sales, PM, finance) Moderate. The concepts are fine; the technical services need extra time. Plan on 40 to 60 hours.
Complete beginner to IT More work than the label suggests, but very doable. Start with the cloud basics before the AWS-specific material.

These are ranges, not promises. The best predictor is your practice-exam score, not the clock.

The parts that trip people up

If I looked at where candidates tend to lose points, it’s rarely the headline topics. It’s these:

  • Pricing details. What’s included in each support plan, and which EC2 purchasing option fits which workload.
  • Security tools with similar names. Knowing which one scans, which one detects threats, which one finds sensitive data.
  • The shared responsibility model for managed services versus EC2.
  • Newer services and features that came in with CLF-C02. AWS refreshes the blueprint and the exam leans on current terminology, so a course from a few years ago can leave gaps.

Is it hard compared to other AWS exams?

No. Not even close. The Solutions Architect Associate and the Data Engineer Associate both involve long scenario questions, 130 minutes, and trade-offs between services that all sound reasonable. Professional and specialty exams are a different level again. Cloud Practitioner is the entry point because it’s designed to be passable by non-engineers.

How to make it easy for yourself

Get the official exam guide and treat the domain list as your checklist. Work through one good course. Then spend at least half your remaining time on practice exams, reviewing every miss. Most people who fail skipped that last step.

And when you do practice, do it timed. The format is forgiving, but sitting through 90 minutes of focused reading is its own skill, and you want that to feel normal before exam day rather than new.

If you’d like a longer plan, our CLF-C02 preparation guide lays out a week-by-week schedule.
