Short answer

In the United States, AWS solutions architects typically earn about $120,000 to $175,000 in base salary. Entry-level roles can start below that, and senior architects at large companies or at AWS itself can earn far more once bonuses and stock are included. Salary surveys vary, so treat these as ranges.

“AWS solutions architect” covers a lot of ground, from a mid-level engineer at a regional company to a principal architect at a big tech firm. The ranges are wide for that reason.

Typical ranges by level

Level Typical US base salary
Junior or associate architect, 1 to 3 years $95,000 to $130,000
Mid-level solutions architect, 3 to 6 years $125,000 to $165,000
Senior architect, 6 or more years $155,000 to $200,000
Principal or enterprise architect $180,000 and up

At large tech companies, total compensation adds bonuses and stock, and can run well above the base figures. Training-vendor salary surveys that look at holders of the Solutions Architect Associate certification have typically put average pay in the mid-$120,000s to mid-$140,000s, which fits the table above.

What moves the number

Experience. This matters most. Designing and delivering real systems is what earns the top pay.

Location. Seattle, the Bay Area, New York, and Washington, DC, pay more. Remote roles often follow regional pay bands.

Employer type. Big tech and well-funded startups pay highest. Consulting firms vary: some pay well with strong bonuses, others pay less but offer variety. Government and enterprise roles are often steadier with lower base pay.

Customer-facing versus internal. Pre-sales solutions architects often have a base plus variable pay tied to sales. Internal architects usually have a flatter structure.

Certifications. Solutions Architect Associate helps. The Professional certification adds more weight for senior roles. They support pay but don’t set it.

Specialization. Security, networking, data, and AI architecture often command premiums.

Working at AWS itself

Solutions architects employed by Amazon Web Services are paid through a package that includes base salary, a sign-on bonus, and restricted stock units that vest over several years. Base pay at AWS is often capped lower than total compensation would suggest, with stock making up much of the upside. If you’re comparing offers, compare total compensation, not just base.

How the certification fits in

An AWS Certified Solutions Architect credential doesn’t come with a salary attached. It’s useful for getting interviews, for qualifying your employer for AWS partner programs, and for showing you understand the fundamentals. Real pay depends on what you’ve built and how well you can explain it.

How to move up the range

1. Take ownership of real projects, with outcomes you can describe in numbers 2. Learn to communicate with non-technical stakeholders 3. Add depth in a high-demand area, such as security, data, or AI 4. Earn the Professional-level certification when you’re ready 5. Be open to changing employers, since that’s often where big raises occur 6. Learn cost optimization, which companies pay for

Outside the US

Pay varies enormously by country. A solutions architect in another market may earn a fraction in absolute terms, though the relationship to local salaries can still be strong. Check local listings.

Is it a good career?

Pay is strong, the work is varied, and demand is steady. The trade-offs are being on call for important systems, constant learning, and the pressure of making recommendations that matter. We discuss how hard it is to get hired in a separate post.
