Is the AWS SAA-C03 Exam Hard to Pass?

It’s a real step up from Cloud Practitioner. Here’s what makes SAA-C03 difficult, what makes it fair, and how to tell whether you’re ready.

Short answer

Yes, SAA-C03 is moderately hard. It’s a 130-minute, 65-question exam made of scenario questions where several answers are technically workable and only one best fits the requirements. With hands-on AWS experience and focused study, most people pass. Without both, it’s easy to fall short.

I’d put SAA-C03 in the middle of the AWS difficulty scale. It’s much harder than Cloud Practitioner and much easier than the professional and specialty exams. The difficulty isn’t about obscure facts. It’s about judgment.

What the exam looks like

You get 65 questions and 130 minutes. Fifty are scored and 15 are unscored trial questions. You need a scaled 720 out of 1,000. Questions are multiple choice or multiple response, and they’re mostly short scenarios: a company has a need, with some constraints, and you pick the best design.

The four domains and their weights:

DomainWeight
Design Secure Architectures30%
Design Resilient Architectures26%
Design High-Performing Architectures24%
Design Cost-Optimized Architectures20%

What makes it hard

Several answers are “correct.” This is the heart of it. You’ll often see three options that would all work, and one is better because it’s cheaper, simpler, or more resilient. The exam is testing whether you spot the key phrase in the question, such as “least operational overhead” or “most cost-effective.”

Breadth. The exam touches storage, compute, databases, networking, security, and integration. You need to know the major services well enough to compare them. Know when to use S3 Standard-IA versus Glacier, SQS versus SNS, RDS Multi-AZ versus read replicas.

Long questions under time pressure. At roughly two minutes per question, you have time, but not much to waste. Wordy scenarios can eat the clock.

Similar-sounding services. Aurora versus RDS, NAT Gateway versus NAT instance, Security Groups versus Network ACLs, Gateway endpoints versus Interface endpoints. The details matter.

What makes it fair

The exam isn’t tricky for tricks’ sake. Every question has a defensible best answer, and it’s usually the one that follows AWS’s own guidance: managed over self-managed, decoupled over tightly coupled, multi-AZ for availability, least privilege for security. If you learn how AWS thinks, you’ll often reach the right answer even when you don’t remember every feature.

And there’s no coding. You won’t write a Lambda function or an IAM policy from memory. You need to recognize good designs, not produce them.

Who finds it easier

  • People with a year or more of hands-on AWS work. AWS recommends this, and it shows.
  • Engineers who’ve built architectures on any major cloud, because the thinking transfers.
  • Candidates who’ve done enough practice exams to recognize question patterns.

Who finds it harder

  • Newcomers to cloud who haven’t touched the console
  • People who study only by watching videos
  • Candidates who memorize service features without learning how to compare them
  • Anyone who rushes the preparation

How hard compared with other exams

It’s clearly harder than CLF-C02, and a bit different from the Developer Associate, which leans more toward APIs and deployment. The Data Engineer Associate is similar in difficulty but has a narrower, data-focused scope. For a full ranking, see our guide to the hardest AWS certifications.

What’s the pass rate?

AWS doesn’t publish one, so any number you read is a guess. I’d ignore those figures entirely and focus on your own readiness. We go further into this in the SAA-C03 success rate.

How to know you’re ready

You should be able to read a scenario and explain, in a sentence, why each wrong answer is wrong. You should be scoring 80% or higher on full-length practice exams you haven’t seen before. And you should have built a few things in the console, not just watched someone else do it.

If you’re not there, don’t book yet. The exam is $150, and a retake is another $150 plus a 14-day wait.

How to make it easier

1. Read the official exam guide and treat the domains as a checklist 2. Build real things in the AWS Free Tier 3. Learn service comparisons, not isolated features 4. Practice reading questions for constraints 5. Take timed practice exams and review every miss

Our SAA-C03 preparation guide puts that into a schedule, and our walkthrough of how to read an AWS exam question covers the single most useful exam skill.
