Which AWS Certification Exam Is Considered the Hardest?
Ask a room of cloud engineers and you’ll hear the same few names. Here’s what the exams look like side by side, and why people single out those few.
Most candidates name the AWS Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional, Advanced Networking Specialty, or Security Specialty as the hardest exams. They run longer, use dense scenario questions, and test depth that’s hard to fake without real experience.
I’m focusing on the exam itself here: format, question style, and time pressure. For the larger effort of earning each credential, see our companion post linked below.

Why those few get named
Solutions Architect Professional. Long scenarios, long answer options, and many near-correct choices. It tests judgment across migration, governance, and hybrid designs. Stamina is a real factor over three hours.
DevOps Engineer Professional. Demands comfort with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and recovery. Many questions combine several services in one scenario.
Advanced Networking Specialty. Dives into routing, hybrid connectivity, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, and DNS at a depth most engineers don’t touch daily.
Security Specialty. Covers identity, logging, encryption, incident response, and governance in detail.
What makes any exam feel hard
- Question length. More reading means more time and fatigue.
- Near-identical answers. Differences hide in a single phrase.
- Depth in unfamiliar areas. You can’t bluff networking or security.
- Time pressure. Under three minutes per question, including reading.
- Experience gaps. Scenarios assume you’ve seen real systems.
How the format differs from the associate level
At the associate level, questions are shorter and aim at choosing the best service for a need. At the professional level, you weigh multiple requirements at once, such as cost, compliance, migration constraints, and downtime limits, and the right answer satisfies all of them.
What candidates say helps
- Take associate-level exams first
- Practice long questions under timed conditions
- Learn to find the deciding phrase in the scenario
- Use elimination aggressively
- Read answer options fully before choosing

Question types
Newer AWS exams may include formats beyond multiple choice and multiple response, such as ordering and matching. Check the current exam guide. We cover formats in AWS exam question types.
Is “hardest” even the right question?
The better question is which exam is right for your role. A hard exam you don’t need is a poor use of time. For the full effort comparison, see what’s the hardest AWS certification to get, and for a ranked overview, read which AWS certification is the hardest.
A few more questions people ask
Is the Machine Learning Specialty still the hardest?
AWS changes its lineup, so check the current list of exams. Whichever specialty you consider, the same rule applies: depth in an unfamiliar topic is what makes it hard.
Are the newer exams easier or harder?
It varies. Newer exams like the Data Engineer Associate are comparable to older associate exams, while newer professional-level exams remain demanding.
What’s the easiest way to prepare for a hard exam?
Take it in steps: pass the related associate exam, build hands-on experience, then practice long scenario questions under timed conditions.
