What an AWS Certification Really Costs (Every Line Item)

Exam fees by level, the 50% voucher most people don't use, what retakes cost, and the hidden expenses nobody budgets for.

The exam fee is the number everyone quotes. It’s also only part of what you’ll spend. Here’s the full picture so you can budget properly.

Exam fees by level

  • **Foundational** (Cloud Practitioner): **$100**
  • **Associate** (Solutions Architect, Developer, SysOps, Data Engineer): **$150**
  • **Professional** (Solutions Architect Pro, DevOps Engineer Pro): **$300**
  • **Specialty**: **$300**

AWS adds applicable taxes, and the final amount can vary by country, currency, and the payment options offered at registration. If you’re outside the US, check the price shown at checkout rather than trusting a blog post, including this one.

These prices have been stable for years, which is unusual and worth appreciating.

The 50% voucher

Every time you pass an AWS certification exam, you receive a **50% discount voucher** toward your next exam.

This is the single most underused thing in AWS certification. Work through what it does to a realistic path:

  • Cloud Practitioner: $100
  • Solutions Architect Associate with voucher: **$75** instead of $150
  • Solutions Architect Professional with voucher: **$150** instead of $300

That’s $325 for three certifications instead of $550. People leave this money on the table constantly, usually because they wait too long and the voucher lapses, or they forget to apply it at checkout. Check your AWS Certification account after every pass and note the expiration.

What a retake costs

If you fail, you pay the **full fee again**. There’s no discounted retake under the standard policy, and you have to wait **14 calendar days** before you’re eligible to sit it again.

There’s no limit on attempts, so a failed exam isn’t the end of anything. But at $150 a try for an associate, two failures turns a $150 exam into a $450 exam. That’s the real argument for not booking before you’re ready.

If you’re in that position right now, we wrote up [what to do after failing an AWS exam](/blog/failed-aws-exam-what-next/).

Study materials

This is where budgets vary wildly, from zero to several hundred dollars.

**Free and genuinely good:**

  • The official exam guide for your certification. Free, and it’s the actual blueprint. Read it first.
  • AWS documentation and the whitepapers referenced in the exam guide.
  • The AWS free tier, for building things yourself.
  • AWS Skill Builder has a free tier with real content.

**Paid, and usually worth it:**

  • A video course, typically $15 to $50 on sale. Useful if you learn better watching than reading.
  • Practice exams. This is the line item I’d argue hardest for. Not because of the score, but because they teach you how AWS writes questions, which is a skill of its own.

**Not worth it:**

  • Question dumps. Beyond the ethical problem, they teach you to recognize questions instead of reason through them, and the exam is specifically designed to punish that.

You can absolutely pass on free materials plus practice questions. A realistic all-in budget for an associate cert is **$150 to $250**.

The costs nobody budgets for

**A working exam environment.** If you’re testing online, you need a private room, a webcam, and stable internet. If your setup doesn’t meet the requirements, you may end up paying for a test center seat or buying a webcam. Read [online versus test center](/blog/aws-exam-online-or-test-center/) before you book.

**Your time.** 40 to 80 hours for an associate cert. If you value your evenings at anything, this dwarfs every other line item on this page.

**Recertification, every three years.** Certifications expire after three years. Budget for renewal or plan to use one of the cheaper routes described in [do AWS certifications expire](/blog/do-aws-certifications-expire/).

How to spend less

**Get your employer to pay.** Many companies reimburse certification costs and a lot of employees never ask. Some will also pay for study time. This is the highest-return five minutes you’ll spend on this whole project.

**Use the voucher.** Covered above, and worth repeating because so many people don’t.

**Watch for AWS promotions.** AWS periodically runs voucher campaigns and discounted exam events, often tied to re:Invent or regional training pushes. If your timeline is flexible, these are worth waiting for.

**Don’t book early.** Scheduling the exam as motivation sounds smart and costs people $150 when they’re not ready. Book when your practice scores say you’re ready, not before.

The bottom line

For a single associate certification, starting from scratch, plan on **$200 to $400** all in and 40 to 80 hours of study.

Set against the [salary range for AWS roles](/blog/aws-certification-salary/), that’s one of the better returns available in professional education. The money isn’t the risk. Spending the time badly is.
