Do AWS Certifications Expire? Recertification, Explained

AWS certs are valid for three years. Here's exactly what happens as that date approaches, and the renewal routes most people don't know exist.

Yes, they expire. Every AWS certification is valid for **three years** from the date you earn it. After that it moves to an inactive state and you can no longer claim it as current.

The good news is that renewing is usually easier and cheaper than the first time around, and there are a few routes people don’t realize are open to them.

What “expires” actually means

Your certification doesn’t disappear from history. You passed the exam, and that happened. What changes is that it’s no longer **active**, which is what matters for partner requirements, for job postings that ask for a current credential, and for your digital badge.

The three-year clock restarts from the date you pass a recertification exam, not from your original certification date. So if you recertify six months early, you don’t lose those six months. You get a fresh three years from the new pass date.

Your renewal options

1. Retake the current version of the exam

The straightforward route. You sit the latest version of the same exam and pay the standard fee. Worth knowing: the exam will have changed. AWS revises these on a cycle, and services that didn’t exist when you first certified are now fair game. Don’t assume your old notes are current.

2. Pass a higher-level certification

This is the one people miss. Earning a higher-level role-based certification satisfies the recertification requirement for the ones below it. Pass the Solutions Architect Professional and your Solutions Architect Associate renews alongside it.

If you were planning to level up anyway, this is free recertification. Sequence your exams with this in mind and you can keep a stack of credentials current with a single sitting.

3. Recertification assessment

AWS offers shorter recertification assessments through your Certification account. These are online, unproctored, and much quicker than a full exam, typically around 40 minutes with fewer questions. They open up in the window before your certification expires.

If this route is available for your certification, it’s the lowest-friction option by a wide margin. Log into your AWS Certification account and check what’s showing as available to you rather than assuming.

4. AWS Skill Builder maintenance

Maintenance through AWS Skill Builder can extend a supported active certification by one year. The certification has to be active and within 90 days of expiring, and you need an active Skill Builder Individual or Team subscription.

This buys you time rather than a full renewal. Useful if your expiration is landing in a bad month.

The mistake that costs people

Letting it lapse.

Once a certification goes inactive, you’re back to taking the full current exam at full price. There’s no grace period that lets you quietly renew three months late. And because AWS updates exam content, the version you’ll face is probably harder than the one you passed, or at least different enough that your old preparation won’t carry you.

Put the expiration date in your calendar the day you pass. Set the reminder for **four months out**, not one. That gives you room to check which renewal routes are open to you and to study if you need to.

How to make renewal painless

**Check your account early.** Everything AWS offers you, including which recertification options are live for your specific certifications, shows up in your AWS Certification account. Look before you plan.

**Stay current as you go.** The people who dread recertification are the ones who passed, closed the book, and didn’t touch AWS again. If you’re working with these services, renewal is mostly a refresher on what changed.

**Stack your timing.** If you hold several certifications with different expiry dates, look at whether one higher-level exam can reset several of them at once.

**Know what changed.** Before you sit a renewal, pull the current exam guide and diff it mentally against what you remember. New services get added. Domain weightings shift. That’s where people get caught.

Is it worth renewing?

If you’re still working in or near AWS, yes. The cost is low compared to what an inactive credential does to a resume that lists it.

If you’ve moved on from cloud work entirely, letting one lapse is a reasonable call. You can always recertify later, and there’s no penalty beyond paying full price again.

The one situation where you absolutely should renew is if your employer’s partner status depends on it. That’s a conversation worth having with your manager well before the deadline, because in that case the company has more at stake than you do, and they should be paying.
