How Long Is the AWS Solutions Architect Certificate Valid?
Three years from the day you pass. Here’s what happens at the end, and the cheapest ways to stay current.
The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certificate is valid for three years from the date you pass. After that it expires unless you recertify by retaking the exam, passing a higher-level exam, or using another recertification option AWS offers.
The Professional version works the same way: three years.
How the three years work
The clock starts on the date you pass the exam. Your exact expiry date is shown in your AWS Certification account and on your digital badge. Pass in June 2026, and the certification runs through June 2029.
When it expires, the credential is no longer active. Your badge shows as expired to anyone who checks.
How to recertify
You have several options.
Retake SAA-C03 (or the current version). Pay the $150 fee and pass again to reset the window. If AWS has released a newer version by then, you’ll take that one.
Pass the professional-level exam. Passing AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional renews your associate-level certification too, according to AWS’s recertification policy. This is the best-value path if you’re advancing anyway.
Use other recertification options. AWS has offered alternatives for some certifications, such as shorter recertification assessments or maintenance programs. These change over time, and availability varies by exam. Always check the official recertification page.
Which option makes sense
It depends on where you’re headed.
| Your situation | Best approach |
|---|---|
| Continuing up the path | Pass a higher-level exam; it renews the lower ones |
| Staying in a role that uses the associate-level skills | Use an available recertification option or retake |
| Not using AWS actively | Consider whether you need the credential at all |
For most people, I’d suggest stacking. If you pass the Professional exam or a specialty one, you’ve advanced and renewed at the same time.
What if it expires?
You don’t lose your account or your learning. You can retake the exam whenever you like. But you won’t hold an active credential in the meantime, which matters if an employer or partner program requires it.
Retaking after expiration costs the full exam price. There’s no late-renewal discount.
Tips to avoid a lapse
- Set a reminder four months out. That’s enough time to study and book.
- Check your voucher. The 50% discount voucher you got when you passed has its own expiration date. Use it on your next exam within that window.
- Keep your contact details current so AWS reminders reach you.
- Plan renewals around work. Some companies need your cert active to count toward their AWS Partner status, and that can mean your employer will pay for the renewal.
Does an expired cert hurt you?
A little. An expired certificate on a resume can look careless, and some employers verify credentials. If yours has lapsed, either renew or list it honestly with the dates.
What about newer versions?
AWS updates exams every few years. If you earned SAA-C03 and a newer version replaces it, your existing certification stays valid until its original expiry date. You don’t need to retake the new version early. At renewal time, though, you’d sit for whichever version is current.

A few more questions people ask
Is the Professional certification valid for three years too?
Yes. Associate and Professional certifications both last three years from the date you pass.
Does passing a newer version extend my old certification?
Passing a current exam resets your validity window for that certification. Check your account for the new expiry date after you pass.
What if I let it expire and want it back?
You’d retake the exam at full price. There’s no late-renewal grace period or discount, so tracking the date saves money.
