Is It Hard to Get Hired as an AWS Solutions Architect?

It’s hard to get hired straight into the role with no experience, and very doable as a second or third step. Here’s the realistic route.

Short answer

It’s hard to get hired as an AWS solutions architect with no experience, because the role expects you to have designed and delivered real systems. It’s much more achievable if you’ve worked in support, administration, development, or operations first. Most architects reach the title after two to five years in related jobs.

I’ll be direct about this since career advice gets rosy: “Solutions Architect” is rarely an entry-level role.

Why it’s hard to start there

Architects make recommendations that cost companies real money and carry real risk. Employers want evidence you’ve seen systems fail, scale, and get expensive. A certification shows knowledge, not that track record.

Competition matters too. Many people want this title because the pay is attractive, and entry-level cloud hiring has been competitive.

Why it’s very doable as a progression

Plenty of architects started as:

  • Systems or network administrators
  • Software developers
  • Cloud support engineers
  • DevOps or operations engineers
  • Database administrators
  • Technical consultants

Those jobs build the intuition architects rely on, and they feed into the role naturally.

What hiring managers look for

Hands-on experience. Have you built and run things on AWS? Can you explain choices?

Design reasoning. Can you walk through a scenario, weigh trade-offs, and justify a recommendation?

Communication. Can you explain technical choices to non-technical people? For customer-facing roles, this matters as much as technical depth.

Breadth with some depth. A working knowledge of many services, and real depth in a few.

Certifications. Solutions Architect Associate is the common baseline. Professional adds weight for senior roles.

What the interview usually involves

Expect:

  • A design exercise: “Design a system for X with these constraints”
  • Questions about trade-offs, such as cost versus availability
  • Questions about past projects and what went wrong
  • Behavioral questions about working with customers or teams
  • Sometimes a whiteboard or diagram walkthrough

Knowing the Well-Architected pillars gives you a shared vocabulary for these conversations.

A realistic path from zero

1. Get an entry point into IT or cloud. Help desk, support, or junior admin. 2. Build skills on the side. Hands-on projects, plus Cloud Practitioner or Solutions Architect Associate. 3. Move into a cloud-facing role. Cloud support, junior cloud engineer, or DevOps. 4. Take ownership of designs. Volunteer for architecture tasks, and document your decisions. 5. Move into an architect title at your company or a new one.

For most people, that takes two to five years.

Can a certification speed it up?

It helps, especially if paired with projects. It won’t skip the experience requirement. Our post on whether you can get a job with an AWS certification goes into this more.

Building proof without a job

You can create evidence on your own:

  • Design and deploy a small multi-tier application
  • Document your architecture decisions in a short write-up
  • Show cost estimates and security choices
  • Publish it on GitHub

Is it worth the effort?

Yes. Pay is strong, the work is varied, and demand stays steady. We cover numbers in how much AWS solutions architects make.

It isn’t a quick path, but it’s a reliable one if you build the experience step by step.

A few more questions people ask

Can I become a solutions architect without a degree?

Yes. Many do, though it often takes longer without one. Strong hands-on experience and certifications can substitute, especially at companies that hire for skills.

Is the Associate certification enough to get hired?

It helps you get interviews, but employers also want real project experience. Treat it as one piece of your case, not the whole thing.

What’s the difference between a solutions architect and a cloud engineer?

Cloud engineers build and operate systems. Solutions architects design them and advise on trade-offs, often working directly with stakeholders or customers. Many architects started as engineers.
