What Is the Success Rate of the AWS SAA-C03 Exam?
AWS doesn’t publish a pass rate, so every number you’ve seen online is a guess. Here’s what we can say, and what actually predicts whether you’ll pass.
AWS does not publish a pass rate for SAA-C03 or any other certification exam, so there is no official success rate. Figures you see online come from surveys, forums, or training vendors and aren’t reliable. What predicts passing far better is your preparation, especially hands-on practice and your practice exam scores.
I get why people search for this. A number feels like it would tell you what you’re up against. But the honest answer is that nobody outside AWS knows, and AWS isn’t telling.
Why there’s no official number
AWS reports scaled scores to candidates but doesn’t release aggregate pass rates. Certification programs differ on this. Some publish results, others keep them private. AWS has kept theirs private, and that’s unlikely to change.
That means any specific percentage you see, “only 50% pass” or “72% pass first try,” is either a guess, a survey of a small group, or a marketing claim. Surveys of people who post in study forums are skewed, because people who passed and people who failed both post, but not in equal proportion, and they don’t represent everyone who sat the exam.
What we can reasonably say
SAA-C03 is not an exam most people pass without effort. It’s a professional-grade associate exam with scenario questions, and candidates who prepare thoroughly pass far more often than those who don’t. That’s about the extent of what’s defensible.
What I can say from experience is that results split along predictable lines:
- People with hands-on AWS experience and several weeks of focused study usually pass
- People who study only by watching video courses fail more often than they expect
- People who consistently score 80% or above on unseen practice exams almost always pass
- People who book the exam on a deadline without checking their practice scores often don’t
What the passing line means
The pass mark is a scaled 720 out of 1,000, which is roughly 72%. It’s not curved to hit a target pass rate. You pass if your score meets the standard, regardless of how others do. So there’s no competition and no quota.
What actually predicts your result
Instead of a population-level pass rate, look at the things you can measure.
Your practice exam scores. Take realistic, full-length, timed exams you haven’t seen before. If you’re averaging 80% or more, you’re in good shape. If you’re averaging 65%, you aren’t.
Your hands-on time. AWS recommends a year of hands-on experience designing solutions. If you don’t have that, replace it with labs in the Free Tier. Building a VPC, a load-balanced web tier, and a database with a standby teaches you things videos can’t.
Your ability to explain wrong answers. If you can state why each distractor fails, you understand the material. If you’re guessing between two choices, you probably don’t yet.
Your consistency across domains. A big gap in one domain is a risk, even though scoring is compensatory.
Warning about practice exam scores
Be careful with how you read your own numbers. If you’ve seen a question before, your score on it is inflated. A practice exam you’ve taken three times tells you about your memory, not your skill. Always use fresh material for your readiness check.
Also, practice exams from different sources vary in difficulty. A 75% on a hard one may be worth more than a 90% on an easy one. If you’re unsure, take sets from two different sources and compare.
Should you be worried?
Not about the statistic. Worry about your plan. If you have a study schedule, you’re doing hands-on work, and you’re testing yourself under timed conditions, you’re doing what the people who pass do.
If you do fall short, it isn’t the end. You can retake after 14 days for the full fee. We cover the process in our post on the SAA-C03 fail rate.
