Does the AWS CLF-C02 Certification Expire?
Yes, after three years. Here’s exactly how the clock works and the ways to keep your Cloud Practitioner credential active.
Yes. The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) certification is valid for three years from the date you pass. After that it expires unless you recertify, either by retaking the exam, passing a higher-level AWS certification, or using AWS’s recertification options where available.
Foundational certifications don’t get a free pass. Cloud Practitioner expires on the same three-year schedule as most other AWS certifications.
How the three years work
Your clock starts on the day you pass the exam. Your expiration date appears in your AWS Certification account and on your digital badge, so you don’t have to calculate it yourself. If you pass on March 10, 2026, your certification is valid through March 2029.
When it expires, you can no longer claim to hold the active credential. Your badge will show as expired, and anyone who verifies it will see that.
Your options for keeping it active
There are a few routes. Which one makes sense depends on where you’re headed.
Retake CLF-C02. The simplest option. You pay the $100 fee, pass the current version, and your three-year window resets.
Pass a higher-level certification. This is what most people do, and it’s the best value. AWS’s recertification rules say that passing a higher-level exam renews lower-level certifications. For example, earning an associate-level certification renews your Cloud Practitioner, and a professional-level one renews the associate and foundational. Always check the current policy on the AWS recertification page, since the details can change.
Use AWS’s recertification assessments or maintenance programs where offered. AWS has offered shorter ways to recertify for some credentials. Availability changes by exam and by year, so check the official page rather than relying on a blog post, ours included.
The smartest strategy
For most people, the best answer is not to renew Cloud Practitioner at all. It’s to stack higher certifications. If you pass Solutions Architect Associate or another associate exam within three years, your foundational certification stays current without a separate effort. You get a more valuable credential and the renewal comes with it.
This also means you shouldn’t stress about the expiry if you’re actively working up the ladder.
What if it lapses?
Nothing dramatic. You don’t lose access to your account or your past learning, and you can retake the exam at any time. The cost is that you’re not holding an active credential in the meantime, and that matters if an employer or partner program requires one.
If you retake after expiration, you pay full price again, with no renewal discount. That’s another reason to track your date.
Practical tips
- Set a calendar reminder four months before expiry. That’s enough time to pick a route without panic.
- Check the discount voucher. After a pass, AWS gives you a 50% voucher for a future exam. Those expire too, so use them within their window.
- Keep your name and email current in your certification account so you receive AWS reminders.
- Don’t wait for the last week. Booking slots fill up, and a rushed retake is a bad way to spend $100.
Does a longer-expired certification still help your resume?
A little, but it can backfire. A resume that says “AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner” with an expired date can look careless, and some applicant systems verify credentials. If it’s expired, either renew it or list it with its dates so it’s clear and accurate.

A few more questions people ask
Will I get a reminder before it expires?
AWS sends reminder emails to the address on your certification account, but don’t rely on that alone. Put your own reminder in your calendar and keep your contact details current.
Can I extend it without retaking?
Passing a higher-level AWS certification renews lower ones, per AWS policy. Check the recertification page for the current rules.
Does my badge show the expiration?
Yes. Your digital badge shows its status and expiration date, and anyone who verifies it will see whether it’s active.
