Can You Prepare for the AWS DEA-C01 Exam in One Week?

For most people, no. For a narrow group with the right background, maybe. Here’s an honest look and a seven-day plan if you’re in that group.

Short answer

Preparing for DEA-C01 in one week is realistic only if you already work in data engineering on AWS and need exam alignment, not new knowledge. For everyone else, one week isn’t enough. The exam has a wide service surface and scenario questions that reward experience.

I’d rather tell you this plainly than sell you a miracle. Seven days can work for a few people, and it fails for most.

Who might pull it off

You could be ready in a week if:

  • You’ve built and run data pipelines on AWS for a year or more
  • You already use Glue, Kinesis, Redshift, Athena, and S3 regularly
  • You know SQL and a programming language well
  • You have the full week free, with 4 to 6 hours a day

If that’s you, you mostly need to learn how the exam asks questions and fill a few gaps, probably governance and some services you don’t touch at work.

Who shouldn’t try

  • Anyone new to AWS
  • Anyone new to data engineering
  • Anyone with a full-time job and only evenings free
  • Anyone who hasn’t taken a practice exam to check their baseline

For you, a rushed attempt risks a $150 failed exam and a 14-day wait.

Step 0: Take a baseline today

Before you commit, take a full-length practice exam. If you score above 70%, a week of targeted study can get you to 80% or better. If you score below 55%, move your date. This one test saves you from a bad plan.

A seven-day plan

Day 1: Read the exam guide and diagnose. Take the baseline. Write down your weakest domains and services.

Day 2: Ingestion and transformation (34% of the exam). Review Kinesis Data Streams versus Firehose, MSK, Glue jobs and crawlers, EMR, DMS, Lambda, and Step Functions. Focus on when to use each.

Day 3: Data stores (26%). S3 storage classes and lifecycle, partitioning, Parquet and ORC, Redshift versus Athena versus Redshift Spectrum, DynamoDB, and schema evolution.

Day 4: Operations and support (22%). Pipeline monitoring, CloudWatch, data quality checks, orchestration, retry and failure handling, and cost basics.

Day 5: Security and governance (18%). KMS, IAM, Lake Formation permissions, encryption in transit and at rest, masking, and compliance.

Day 6: Timed practice exam. Sit a full 130-minute exam. Review every miss, and write one line on why you missed it.

Day 7: Light review and rest. Revisit your weakest services. Do not take another full exam. Sleep early.

How to study efficiently in a week

  • Use comparisons. Study services in pairs and ask “when would I choose this instead?”
  • Don’t read documentation front to back. Skim the AWS docs and FAQ for the services you know least.
  • Do practice questions in blocks by domain on days 2 through 5, then a full exam on day 6.
  • Keep a one-page cheat list of your repeated mistakes.

What you’ll still be missing

A week can’t replace experience. Some questions will test details you only get from running pipelines: what breaks at scale, how retries behave, what a schema change does downstream. If you’ve lived that, you’ll recognize the traps. If not, you’ll be guessing.

What if you fail?

Retake after 14 days with the domain breakdown from your score report as your guide. A failed rushed attempt isn’t a disaster, but it is $150.
